Editor’s Note: Joey Jackson is a criminal defense attorney and a legal analyst for CNN and HLN. Prosecutors say they were no such thing, but were rather reimbursement to Cohen for a $130,000 payment he made on Trump’s behalf to former adult actress Stormy Daniels. Trump has said that prosecutors have “no case” against him. Expect prosecutors to talk about that freely, as they did during jury selection. Team Trump could say that he is completely innocent and the state’s case is built upon a pack of lies with no factual basis.

They drew inspiration from the state’s 2008 Democratic primary, when “uncommitted” came in second place to Hillary Clinton with more than 40% of the vote. “The President is working hard to earn every vote in Michigan,” a Biden campaign spokesperson said in a statement. In recent weeks, the Biden administration has stressed its efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza and sharpened its tone toward Israel. Here’s what to know:Who is running in the South Carolina Republican primary? South Carolina’s primaries are open, which means any registered voter can take part in either the Republican primary or the Democratic primary, but not both. When Trump won the South Carolina primary with more than 32% of the vote in 2016, just about 1% of the GOP primary voters were Black. Only once since 1980 have South Carolina Republican primary voters not supported the ultimate nominee. The only recent election in which South Carolina did not pick the ultimate Democratic nominee was in 2004, when then-Sen. John Edwards, who was born in South Carolina and represented North Carolina in the Senate, beat then-Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

DETROIT (AP) — Henry Fambrough, the last surviving original member of the iconic R&B group The Spinners, whose hits included “It’s a Shame,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love" and “The Rubberband Man,” died Wednesday, a spokesperson for the group said. Fambrough died peacefully of natural causes in his northern Virginia home, spokesperson Tanisha Jackson said in a statement. Along with Fambrough, Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, Bobby Smith, Philippé Wynne and John Edwards were listed as inductees. It “was a long time ago,” Fambrough said at the time of the 1960s, when he first walked into the studio. The Spinners joined Motown Records 10 years later.

(AP) — Residents of an east Arkansas town have been without running water for the past two weeks after the state was hit by below-freezing temperatures, and the outage has forced them to line up for bottled water, fill up jugs or take showers at a truck brought in by the state. The town faced a similar crisis last summer, when the same part of the city was without water in June. The outages are affecting one of two water systems for Helena-West Helena, which was two separate cities until 2006. Each day, distribution sites for the water have seen a steady line of people filling up on water to use for their homes. He said citizens in general have been understanding of the emergency water distribution process.

This is the third time that I’ve really closely covered these races. I do think the weather is an election story, but it’s hard to know exactly what it means. I’ve heard people say that because it’s so cold, there are Trump voters who are going to say, eh, he’s going to win it anyway. That’s really cold. It seems like nobody will ever really know exactly what the weather did.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said if the U.S. company fails to adequately address the regulator's concerns, "My AI", launched in April, could be banned in the UK. "The provisional findings of our investigation suggest a worrying failure by Snap to adequately identify and assess the privacy risks to children and other users before launching 'My AI'", Information Commissioner John Edwards said. "My AI went through a robust legal and privacy review process before being made publicly available," a Snap spokesperson said. The ICO is investigating how "My AI" processes the personal data of Snapchat's roughly 21 million UK users, including children aged 13-17. Social media platforms, including Snapchat, require users to be 13 or over, but have had mixed success in keeping children off their platforms.

Snap is under investigation in the U.K. over privacy risks associated with the company's generative artificial intelligence chatbot. If the ICO's provisional findings result in an enforcement notice, Snap may have to stop offering the AI chatbot to U.K. users until it fixes the privacy concerns. The AI chatbot, which runs on OpenAI's ChatGPT, has features that alert parents if their children have been using the chatbot. Other forms of generative AI have also faced criticism as recently as this week. Bing's image-creating generative AI has been used by extremist messaging board 4chan to create racist images, 404 reported.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Lauch Faircloth of North Carolina, a onetime conservative Democrat who switched late in his career to the Republicans and then got elected to Congress, died Thursday. Before the end of the 1998 campaign, Faircloth had fired his campaign consultant and tried to link Edwards to Bill Clinton and portray him as out of step with moderates and conservatives. Sanford rewarded Faircloth with an appointment to the state Highway Commission, which he chaired later under Gov. Faircloth was putting together his own Senate bid in 1986 when his old friend Sanford entered the race, causing him to stand down. "For close to 50 years, I've been a businessman making a payroll on Fridays," Faircloth said during his 1998 reelection bid.

A GOP divide in Iowa over Trump -- and over the truth

Mudd does not dispute this but says he would have more confidence if states followed the same procedures. “Nothing about that deal is the American way, I don’t think,” Mudd Sr. says of the latest Trump indictment. And it vividly captures the country’s red state-blue state divide, which includes what you think of Trump and where you get your news. Taylor supported Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2016 caucuses, but voted for Trump in November 2016 and again in 2020. Shopping around is an Iowa tradition, but both understand that a splintered field eventually helps Trump, as it did in 2016.

The chance of Trump winning another term is very real

Similarly, Clinton’s edge was in the single digits over Obama in South Carolina at this stage of the campaign. Of course, winning the primary is one thing for Trump, who has led in almost every single Republican primary poll published in the past eight years. A poll out last week from Marquette University Law School had Biden and Trump tied percentage-wise (with a statistically insignificant few more respondents choosing Trump). The good news for Democrats is that general election polling, unlike primary polling, is not predictive at this point. But for now, the chance that Trump is president in less than two years time is a very real possibility.

Donald Trump was indicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying documents related to alleged hush-money payments. Several public figures also have similar scandals, including Harvey Weinstein, Michael Jackson, and Bill O'Reilly. US presidents Thomas Jefferson, Warren Harding, and Richard Nixon were all involved in hush money scandals. Other notable politicians who made hush money payments include former treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton and former Sen. John Edwards. Outside of politics, there have been several public figures who made hush money payments including Harvey Weinstein, Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, Jerry Falwell Jr., and Bill O'Reilly.
The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) (LSEG.L) and UK trade officials visited several cities in China to promote UK capital markets recently. Wilson Xu, a banking veteran from CITIC Securities pioneering the Stock Connect programme, said liquidity will improve when there is a critical mass of Chinese listings. The Shanghai-London Stock Connect was launched in 2019 and the link was expanded last year to include Shenzhen and Switzerland. Even arrangements by SIX to allow roughly 2.5 hours of trading in a session for Chinese GDRs didn't help. Chinese companies, however, have been positive in public disclosures about their forays in Europe which have given them an alternative channel to raise funds and access foreign currency for their operations abroad.
Like Donald Trump, John Edwards was accused of paying off a mistress during a campaign. Edwards was charged with campaign finance violations over the payments but wasn't convicted. For one, Trump has not been charged with violating federal campaign finance laws. It may well be true that the Edwards precedent is why the Justice Department didn't charge Trump with a campaign finance violation. Bragg does not need to prove that Trump broke federal campaign finance laws; he needs to prove that he falsified business records, which is a crime no matter the reason.

UK watchdog fines TikTok $16 mln for 'misusing children's data'

LONDON, April 4 (Reuters) - Britain's data watchdog said on Tuesday it had fined TikTok 12.7 million pounds ($15.9 million) for breaching data protection law including by using the personal data of children aged under 13 without parental consent. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) estimated that TikTok allowed as many as 1.4 million UK children under 13 to use its platform in 2020, even though it sets 13 as the minimum age to create an account. TikTok did not abide by those laws," UK Information Commissioner John Edwards said. Children's data may have been used to track and profile them, potentially presenting them with harmful or inappropriate content, he added. The London Stock Exchange and British officials are ramping up efforts to build a robust pipeline of Chinese firms, trading on London's status as Europe's deepest capital market. Edwards said he thought London was "an obvious choice" for many Chinese companies "given the issues around the U.S.-China relationship." However, the China-Switzerland Connect - an eight-month-old rival scheme - is gaining more traction among Chinese companies, partly due to a relatively easier process. The London Stock Exchange is "actively looking at how they can address some of the issues," Edwards said. Edwards said officials have identified hundreds of Chinese companies that could potentially issue GDRs in London and "are actively approaching them at the moment."
Chris Christie, a former district attorney, said Trump thrives on "chaos and turmoil." But an indictment "never helps anybody," Christie said on ABC's "This Week." And so he wants to create the chaos and turmoil on his terms," Christie said. However, Christie, who is also a former district attorney, added: "But look at the end, being indicted never helps anybody. "I don't think that the American people will probably see this as a huge crime," Christie said.
John Edwards was charged with campaign finance violations in 2011 related to his 2008 presidential run. Edwards was acquitted of one campaign finance violation charge — the others were dropped. The last time a presidential candidate was criminally charged for alleged campaign finance violations, John Edwards faced up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines. Edwards was John Kerry's vice presidential running mate in 2004 in the pair's losing race against George W. Bush and Dick Cheney prior to launching his own presidential campaign in 2008. "It's not illegal to be a pig," said Brett Kappel, a Washington campaign finance expert told The Washington Post at the time the charges were brought.
Hunter Biden has added a high-powered attorney to his legal team amid an ongoing federal probe and plans by Republicans to make him a key focus of investigations when they take control of the House next month. Abbe Lowell, of the firm Winston and Strawn, will be primarily responsible for coordinating Hunter Biden’s response to anticipated congressional oversight investigations, as well advising on other legal issues and overall strategy, an attorney for Hunter Biden told NBC News on Wednesday. "Hunter Biden has retained Abbe Lowell to help advise him and be part of his legal team to address the challenges he is facing,” the attorney, Kevin Morris, said. "Lowell is a well-known Washington based attorney has represented numerous public officials and high profile people in DOJ investigations and trials as well as Congressional Investigations. Mr. Lowell will handle congressional investigations and general strategic advice."
LONDON — TikTok may face a £27 million ($29 million) fine in the U.K. after privacy regulators found failings in the company’s handling of children’s data. “We all want children to be able to learn and experience the digital world, but with proper data privacy protections,” Information Commissioner John Edwards said in a statement Monday. In a statement to CNBC, a TikTok spokesperson said the company disagrees with the ICO’s provisional fine and plans to make a formal response. Last year, the Netherlands’ Data Protection Authority handed TikTok a 750,000 euro ($723,371) fine for violating the privacy of young children and failing to offer its information in Dutch. Western officials are worried the platform may be providing a backdoor to Beijing allowing it to snoop on non-Chinese users.
Washington (CNN Business) The UK said Monday it could impose a multimillion-dollar fine on TikTok after the government found the short-form video platform may have violated children's privacy. The potential fine of £27 million, or about $29 million, follows an investigation by the UK's data privacy regulator, which found that over the course of two years from May 2018 to July 2020, TikTok may have breached UK law by processing data of kids under 13 without parental consent. In a legal document notifying TikTok of the possible fine, the UK Information Commissioner's Office also said TikTok may have processed sensitive categories of data "without legal grounds," and may have failed to provide information to its users transparently enough. "We all want children to be able to learn and experience the digital world, but with proper data privacy protections," said Information Commissioner John Edwards in a statement . In a statement, TikTok said: "While we respect the ICO's role in safeguarding privacy in the UK, we disagree with the preliminary views expressed and intend to formally respond to the ICO in due course."
